What is Calibration?
Calibration is the process of comparing an instrument under test to a known reference in order to find the error. More often than not, adjustment is not required since the error does not usually exceed the stated accuracy of the instrument. If adjustments are required, and as long as the instrument has an adjustment procedure, (and as long as the customer agrees to the adjustment cost), the required adjustments will be performed. This adjustment essentially "teaches" the instrument to produce results that are more accurate than those that would occur otherwise. The instrument can then provide more accurate results than before it was adjusted.
Why Have Your Equipment Calibrated?
The reason instruments are calibrated is to maintain any measurement uncertainty by ensuring the accuracy of the test equipment. Calibration allows you to quantify errors or uncertainties within a measurement process.
For example, if you use thermometers in a food production facility you will need to make sure the food is prepared correctly to ensure bacteria is killed and safe for human consumption. The food must be kept above 75.0°C, the thermometer being used indicates 76.8°C and providing the meters calibration shows it to be accurate within 1.5°C at 75.0°C you can be confident the food is safe. If the system has an accuracy of 2.5°C then you will not be certain the food is safe.
Food safety is just one example where calibration is needed, there are thousands of industrial and mechanical process (to list a couple) that require units to be calibrated and with our ISO accredited lab you can be assured you getting the quality service you need!
